When 92 YR old Media Walters passed away in Middletown, Ohio A slice of American history passed with her. Although it is becoming common place for many Americans to reach their 90's these days, Mrs. Walters' life was perhaps more out of the ordinary than most of her generation: When still a babe in arms, she traveled west in a wagon train. Her's was truly a most remarkable life-spanning that unique time period in American History from the age of covered wagons to today's high tech computer chips and space travel! Media was the youngest of 8 children born to Asberry and Mary (Caudill) Back When Media was born on May 27, 1898, in the hills of Breathitt Co. Ky. the family lived on Hunting Bays Creek. She represented the 4th generation of the Back Family to live in that remote and sometimes dangerous Eastern Ky. County well known by its sobriquet, "Bloody Breathitt." Making a living in the mountians was not always easy and many Appalachians sought a better life by moving west. One of those intrepid indivals was a younger brother of Asberry. Robert E Lee Bach had moved to Missouri and sent numerous letters back to Eastern Kentucky relating how much money could be made off the rich farmland. In an interview just months before her death, Media laughed when she remembered her mother saying that, "Uncle Rob wrote that money was growing on bushes." After several such letters, Uncle Rob finally persuaded Asberry and Mary to pull up stakes and move west. Although Media was an infant and could not personaly remember the trip,she stated that, "Ma told me all about it over and over." Mary related that they sold all their property with the exception of only a few articles of furniture and personal items to take with them to establish a new home. As the word spread in the neighborhood about the Bach leaving the mountains and heading for the fertile farmlands of Missouri, two more familes by the name of Holbrook joined in. After weeks of prepartion and bidding family and friends goodbye, the small but determined troup headed northwest out of Breathitt county in three covered wagons. Media remembered her mother telling her how the little wagon trained trekked slowly but syeadily through the mountains into the Bluegrass Plains and how they would camp at night beside the road. When the travlers finally reached the broad Ohio River, the only way to cross was on a ferry, Mary told how she was prepared to stay seated on theire covered wagon and hold the infant Media in her arms as the crossed the river. But the ferry pilot would not allow anyone to remain on the wagon stating that only the previous day horses had bolted in mid-stream, jumping over the side of the ferry dragging a wagon into the murky waters drowning those who had stayed on board. The point was well taken and the crossing was made without incident. After crossing the river, the wagon train passed through Indiana, described by Mary as "The Prettiest Country" they ever saw on their long journey. After reaching their destination, they discovered that uncle Rob's letters had more accurately described wishful thinking than reality. The Backs' savings rapidly dwindled as Asberry desperately tried to make a go of it in hes newly adopted state. But things did not improve and the family "busted." With their money gone and their hopes shattered, the Backs did the only thing they felt they could do: Return to Breathitt Co. Soon the family was under way, retracing the trails they had passed over with so much hope only a few months before. Asberry had to find jobs along the way to buy provisions for his family. Therefore the sojourn back took much longer than the initial trip. Although road-weary, broke and probably embarrassed about their failure, The Backs were warmly welcomed home by their old friends, neighbors and kin. Not long after their return, Asberry and Mary were once again operating a small generalstore as they had been before. They regained a firm financial footing and lived the remainder of their lives in Breathitt County. Media grew up on Frozen Creek in "Bloody Breathitt", and , as was the custom in those days, married Charley Walters in September 1913, at the age of 15. Theirs was not an easy life as they became the parents of 12 children --- 4 dying in infancy and another lost to cancer as a teenager. After nearly 3 decades of marriage, the couple decided they might find a better life outside the mountians and therefore moved to Middletown, Ohio in 1942. With the exception of a short time spent in Versailles, Indiana, the walters spent the rest of their lives in Butler Co. Ohio, Charley passing away in 1970 leaving Media a widow for the remaining 2 decades of her life. Media Walters was a lady of dignity and wisdom, had an exceptional memory and exhibited an unshakeable faith in God. By the time of her death this remarkable woman could count 99 bloodline decendants --- most of whom were living to mourn her passing.
