Accused baby killer takes stand
Stacy: I would just toss him a little
LEBANON The man charged in the death of a 9-month-old last April admitted
to playing rougher than normal with his girlfriends son on
the afternoon the baby was rushed to the hospital.
In an unexpected move at his trial Thursday in Warren County Common Pleas Court,
Ronald E. Stacy II, 27, of Turtlecreek Township, took the stand.
His voice quivering and cracking through most of his hourlong testimony, Stacy
recounted the events of April 27, 2005, when 9-month-old Caden Shea lost consciousness
and suffered injuries that led to his death three days later when he was taken
off life support.
Stacy testified he at first lied to investigators about the childs death
because he was scared and worried about what others would think.
It was only during his second interview with police that Stacy admitted to dropping
the child, and playing rougher than normal with him at his apartment
near Towne Mall.
I was scared of how people were going to look at me, Stacy testified
in court Thursday. And I was scared of what was going to happen to me.
Im still scared.
He is charged with murder by way of child endangering. If convicted, he faces
15 years to life in prison.
Friends and relatives testifying on Stacys behalf recounted stories about
Stacys interaction with children and his fondness for playing with them,
which they said often included tossing the children up in the air and catching
them or spinning them around in chairs.
Stacy said he did both of these April 27, 2005, while baby-sitting for his girlfriend,
Heather Spencer-Shea, who was out getting a haircut and picking up dinner.
Stacy told police his girlfriend had asked him to play more gently with her son.
I didnt throw him up as high. I would just toss him a little,
he said in court Thursday.
Stacy said he was tossing and catching the baby on that April afternoon until
the boy made a face and got upset. Stacy testified he then lifted the baby onto
his hip, but the child did a back bend, which didnt make him happy.
The baby started crying, so Stacy picked him up again and dropped him. After
soothing him, Stacy said he placed the child on the floor.
When Stacy came back minutes later, the baby wasnt breathing and his
eyes were rolled back in his head, Stacy testified.
While performing resuscitation, Stacy first phoned his mother, who told him to
call 911, he said.
Authorities said Caden died of a fractured skull, that both sides of the infants
brain were bruised and that his retinas were detached from his eye sockets.
Stacys trial is expected to wrap up early next week.

Man convicted in baby's death
Mothers boyfriend says he dropped infant
LEBANON Im not a murderer, Ronald E. Stacy II said,
after a jury found him guilty on Friday of killing his girlfriends 9-month-old
son.
Well, the jury found otherwise, Judge James Heath replied before
ordering the mandatory 15-years-to-life in prison sentence.
After less than three hours of deliberations, a jury in Warren County Common
Pleas Court found Stacy, 27, of Turtlecreek Township, guilty of murdering of
Caden Shea as a result of child endangering. The baby boy was removed from life
support on April 30, three days after Stacy called 911 for help at his apartment
south of the Towne Mall in Middletown.
On Thursday, Stacy told the jury he dropped the infant on April 27 as he baby-sat
while the infants mother went out to prepare for a celebration. She returned
with sandwiches and a fresh haircut to learn her comatose son was headed to the
hospital and Stacy was under police scrutiny.
Im sorry for what happened, but theres nothing I could do,
Stacy said Friday.
The babys parents, separated since his birth, told Heath about their loss
and appealed for maximum punishment.
I feel guilt for every breath I take and every smile I smile, the
mother, Heather Spencer-Shea, said.
The babys injuries included extensive bleeding to the brain and both eyes;
swelling of the brain, consistent with being shaken; and a fractured skull, consistent
with the blow to the head that coroners ruled was the cause of death.
His life was based on trust. That trust was broken, his father, Michael
Shea said. I never thought I would have to experience this horrible feeling.
