HOME SWEET HOME

It was a peaceful fire station,
Gus and Max were out in back,
When came the cutest of creations ---
A Beagle white, with brown and black.

They dropped what they were doing,
And they ran out toward the walk.
Gus gave a “howdy-doo there,”
And those dogs began to talk.

“Can we help you with your suitcase?
Would you like a bite to eat?”
And as they opened up the fence gate,
She came inside to rest her feet.

They learned her name was Millie,
She was a perky, playful pup,
But had some trouble with her tummy,
And her days on earth were up.

She spoke about her family,
And the day she rode home in their car.
She shared her fondest memories,
Of how their love had touched her heart.

“I’m on my way to Heaven,”
As she wagged her tri-toned tail,
“To meet my Lord and Shepherd,
He’ll be waiting on the trail.”

“Don’t you mean the Bridge,
Where pets all go to wait
For their human family friends,
To go together through the gates?”

“No, my master said a prayer,
That God would give me to his uncle,
He thought we’d make a special pair ---
Like me his passing came quite sudden.

He works with Team Omega,
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge,
Where he serves our Lord and Savior ---
I’ll get to help him comfort kids.

And he’s got a dog named Jack,
And a pal Augustus Reese.”
Gus gave a nudge to Max,
“I hope that Heaven has those treats!”

“Though he’s tall they call him Dink,”
Gus grinned, “Would you get a load of that!”
“It’s not as strange as you might think,”
Said that puny puppy Max.

“And his father’s name is Gustav,”
Gus beamed from tail to head.
Though his bubble soon was busted,
“But he goes by Ed instead.”

“Well, I liked that Sirius Soda,
And thank you for the bone,
But I really must be going,
It’s time I'm heading home.”

She said she’d see them later,
With a sparkle in her eye.
Then as she turned to leave the station,
She smiled and waved goodbye.

As they got back to their ballgame,
Gus said, “I just loved her Texas twang.”
Then he came hard with the cowhide,
And Max unleashed his swing.

He smacked that sidearm slider
And stuck it in the seats.
(It landed on the sidewalk
And rolled across the street.)

By the time Gus got the ball,
That hound had rounded third.
He gave that throw his all,
But Max was just a blur.

As that Beagle made his slide,
The church bells next door tolled.
Then Gus gazed up and smiled,
“I think our friend is safely home.”
