ani difranco ani difranco has to be the diva of all modern hairy-pitted lesbians. her lyrics are awesome.. extremely thought-provoking and deep.. she's always on top of it. if you're in a "fuck the world" kinda mood, ani is your gal. she even has some very nifty pretty songs for a little contrast. if you've been cheated on, listen to 'untouchable face' .. it's very...inspirational ;c) check out her new song "garden" too.. the lyrics are awesome.
lou reed lou reed is nifty because he has the tendency to sing in a poetically nonchalant way about some deeply emotional things. my favourite song also happens to be sung by lou. "perfect day" appears on the trainspotting soundtrack.. a few years ago bbc managed to get together 27 different singers and musicians to sing individual lyrics. from the song for a very awesome video. it's a must-check-out
jeff buckley jeff buckley was in a genre of his own. think of him as a white boy singing the blues with a little added pop. his voice is just damn sexy, and his lyrics are to die for. his covers are awesome too.. he sings them as if they are his own. if you want to listen to one of his songs, make sure you check out 'lover, you should come over' .. it'll make either make you cry or have an orgasm... depending on what type of person you are. too bad he had to die at such a young age.. i'm sure he broke the hearts of many hopeless romantic boys and girls
tori amos what sane person's music collection would be complete without a little tori amos? she, of course, is the queen of female angst and conveluted metaphors.. you have to either love her or hate her (pity to those who hate her) .. tori is undoubtedly pure genius.. she composes both the lyrics and music to all of her songs and tickles the ivory like you wouldn't even know. many a gay man would probably step over to straightdom for a piece of this.
janis joplin what can i say? i love me some janis. she makes me want to be a heroine-addicted lesbian. well, maybe not.. but after listening to her sing, with that raw and raspy pain-filled voice, she makes me realize what being real really means. love, pain, and sacrifice are just parts of life. you've gotta be humble and you've gotta "get it while you can"
joni mitchell not only is joni mitchel a fabulous folk singer.. but she is also the most remarkable poet of the 20th century i have ever encountered. her style of music is ironic because it usually has a happy-go-lucky beat with lyrics of incredible social import. you've just gotta love her. oh, and she does a much better job with 'big yellow taxi' than sheryl crow could ever dream of doing.
aimee mann if you've seen the movie magnolia, you've heard aimee mann. pretty much every song on the soundtrack is by her. it's not surprising.. she has enough songs to fit every mood perfectly in that overly-complex movie. aimee has a very unique voice and her songs tend to give people chills and sniffles everytime they hear them. if you really want to cry like a baby, download 'wise up' -- a song that really helped me get back on my feet.
