CULTURE SHOCK AND ADAPTION
Culture shock and adaption
When you arrive at your final destination you will be feeling on a high and excited about all the new experiences that are about to happen. This will probably last for a couple of weeks and then you may start to feel what is known as 'home sickness'. When you are in this period of time the only thing you'll want to do is go home. Everything will feel different and you don't feel settled.
It is important for you to know that this will not last long and once you have gotten through this time you will gradually start to take in the new culture and environment you are in, which will enable you to settle down.
Symptoms of culture shock
- Sadness
- Insomnia
- Irritable (generally irrational behaviour)
- Longing for your family
- Feeling inadequate
How to adapt to living in the USA
- Develop a routine.
- Socialise as much as possible with the people you are living with in your accommodation.
- Join a club or society.
- Stay in touch with your friends back in the UK using phone cards, over e-mail or Messenger, so you can stay in touch with people who know you.
- Organise activities or trips for the future.
- It shouldn't last long and you'll soon feel settled.
Remember that adjustment periods vary depending on the individual.
