This has got to be my favourite photo. I got it from a local newspaper. I'm wearing the blue cap no.4 and I was still a Sliema player then - undoubtedly the best team on the island. Well I didn't make the level and I'm playing in the second division for the only surviving Gozitan team - Otters ASC. We may not be world beaters, but the team's great just the same.
Coming back to Sliema, thats where I was born and bred - Sliema Pitch. That's where we hang out every day in summer. Now Malta's surrounded with beaches, but for us, there's nothing better than pitch. We won all there was to win at the youth level - a confirmation of skill, but also the unity that reigns in our group. See our team photos below.
Being the most professional sport on the islands, our teams fair quite well in Europe compared to other sports, however over the past decade it has been losing its popularity. Gone are the days when Suda, Kevin and I [the supporters club] created the best organised support ever seen on any local terrace. Flags, drums, banners, streamers, horns, sirens, bands, and last but not least our voices -singing the sliema supporters' traditional songs and anything which gave us the edge on the opposite terraces, traditionally Neptunes, but undoubtedly San Giljan in the last decade of the century. Well at least we can say that we had our fair share of being ultras and all the fun, pain, and also physical harm that goes with it (hehe!). No Regrets! Totally Dedicated.
Finally, Cain - we will never forget the good times we had together. Your smile, your expressions, your words, all our memories - they will stay with us forever. |
