Chemistry
Manager
Résumé
|
Background
My managerial experience begins after my first year in
college in 1986. Needing money to pay for college, I sought employment.
Transferring between colleges and starting a new program after graduation led to
restarting my employment several times. My eager attitude and my ability to
grasp new concepts quickly led to my promotion at the end of one month of employment at
every position I have held except one. That single position, advancement to the
Director of Public Access Computers, occurred only after I created the position,
which took two years. I attribute my successes as a manager to the basic
philosophy that:
The first rule of the successful manager is:
Get work done through others.
In my experience, the best way to insure this goal is
accomplished is through teaching the team correct principles and then letting them direct their own efforts. These principles must include why as well as how and what. This leads not only to successful management but also to motivated teamwork.
As a manager, there is a constant balancing act involving many fine lines. For
example, there is a fine line between maintaining communication to insure the
manager is aware of the current status of projects and micro-managing. Being
aware through meta-cognition and observation allows these fine lines to become
tools of success.
