NEW RULES 2008 -2009
It has now been confirmed that in all matches in Wales from now at Under 19 level and age groups below ELV 3, which states that "players are able to defend a maul by pulling it down provided that the player pulling down the maul grasps an opposing player in the maul anywhere
between the shoulder and the hips then pulls the player to the ground" WILL apply.
Now that the question of the pulling down of the maul at Youth and Junior level has been resolved we will proceed to print the revised Rugby Pathway booklet and place this on the WRU website as soon as possible

MAY 7th
North Wales finished off their 2008/09 season at Mold with a well deserved and emphatic victory against Lancashire. In so doing they won the "Alun Pennington Shield" beating Lancashire both home and away, becoming the first ever North Wales side to do this.
Lancashire kicked off the match but where immediately pinned in their own half for the opening period with very strong running from the forwards and backs. A great interchange between Dafydd Jones and David Bowen saw Dafydd nearly scoring in the corner. The resultant scrum was taken against the Head and, after a powerful charge by
Alex Pope, the ball found its way to David who barged his way over for the first try of the match.

Lancashire came straight back, and with their first real possession, impressively moved the ball along the backs scoring well in the corner. This however was the only time they really threatened in the first half with North Wales stepping up their game with David Bowen scoring his second try from close range after a series of forward
drives. After an excellent double miss move in the centre David was stopped just short of the line, the recycled ball then being taken on by Dafydd Jones spinning over to score his first try for the team. Quick hands through the entire back line from a line out led to the final try of the first half, with David Bowen cutting inside
the last two defenders to finish off a very impressive move.
Half time score 22-5.
A number of changes from both sides at half time failed to prevent North Wales continuing their domination of the match. After an excellent break down the blind side Dafydd Jones put David Bowen through on the full back who he successfully sent the wrong way to score his 4th try of the game. Dafydd then managed to rip the ball from
Lancashire's right wing in the tackle racing down the line to score from 30 yards. Both these tries were converted by Osian Jones taking the score to 36-5. Lancashire then started to exert pressure of their own and, after a long delay for a head injury to Sion Hughes, managed to score a good try via the forwards which went
unconverted. The final score of 36 - 10 was a fair reflection on the game with all off the Gogledd team deserving praise. Lancashire maybe rested a few too many of their better players in the first half but never gave up, and will surely improve the more they play together. The Gogledd pack were very impressive on the day with the front
five in particular providing the platform for the team. The back row again showed their ability, defending impressively, winning turnover ball and providing the links to the backs who, very well led by Rhys Williams, managed to bring off a number of moves from the training ground.
Man of the match could have gone to any number of players from the forwards or backs. Emyr Gwynedd had a very solid game making many important tackles in mid field but it was left between Dafydd Jones and David Bowen with David edging it for his four tries.
A great squad effort with plenty to build on for next season.

opposition to a period of sustained pressure. West Cheshire defended bravely but could not keep out No 8 Alex Pope who barged his way over for the first try of the match after a series of forward drives. Strong running from the backs and forwards quickly led to a second try by Max Davies who forced his way over in the corner. Neither try
was converted and to their credit the visitors slowly came back into the game. This was, in part, due to a series of infringements from the North Wales side, which led to a number of penalties against them. West Cheshire took full advantage and impressively ran the ball through the backs scoring a good try, which was well
converted from the touchline. Any thoughts of a comeback were soon dispelled however as the North Wales pack quickly re-asserted themselves. Disappointingly good play was often wasted as the team continued to give possession back to the opposition through silly mistakes. With the game score still close edging towards half time it was left to prop Sion
Hughes to score yet another try for North Wales, keeping up his record of scoring in every game. Half time score 15-7.
An impressive aspect of this North Wales team is despite ten changes during the second half the team continued to dominate which shows the healthy competition for places the squad has.
The first points after the break came from a penalty by Osian Jones which took the score to 18-7. Playing with a more disciplined approach North Wales began to dominate possession and territory. Some strong running down the
touch line by Alex Pope led to David Bowen scoring in the corner and this was quickly followed by a second try for Sion Hughes who powered his way over. Osian had now found his range converting both tries impressively.
With both sets of backs tackling effectively it was the North Wales forwards who continued to make the difference with some strong line breaking runs, the highlight being a fantastic try by prop Callum Mitchell who ran in breaking all tackles from 30 yards.
An injury to captain Rhys Williams, who had led the team well throughout, meant a team re-shuffle with openside flanker Dafydd Jones moving to fly half where he again impressed. The one thing this North Wales team has is pace throughout the team and it was left to David Bowen to score the final try of the match, and his second, by running through the middle
of the West Cheshire defence to score under the posts.
West Cheshire must be commended for competing throughout the match but North Wales were just too strong on the day. The team continues to build and grow, with improvement showing in all areas except for the penalty count, which needs to be addressed before the next game.
