NW CUP UNDER 12 FINAL

Newtown U12’s have been crowned North Wales champions for the second year in succession. Having beaten many people’s favourites for the competition, Mold, in the regional final last weekend Newtown made the long trip to Bangor for a rerun of last years final against Llandudno.

Llandudno got off to a dream start with a try straight from the kick off through centre Mickey Murray who despite the attentions of the most of the Newtown side made a fine individual run from inside his own half to score a try close to the posts, to give Llandudno an early 5-0 advantage.

Newtown showed great character in not letting this early setback worry them and came back strong using their forward power to put sustained pressure on the the Llandudno line. Newtown dominated first half possession and territory through their pack of forwards whilst the backs defended superbly to contain the dangerous Llandudno back line. Their persistent efforts rewarded them with three tries in the space of 15 minutes, with one of the tries converted the score at half time was 17-5 to Newtown.

The second half continued in much the same vain with the Newtown forwards dominating the game and being rewarded with a further 4 tries, 1 of which was converted. Newtown prop Thomas Andrews who was outstanding throughout with some strong runs and powerful tackling claimed 3 tries. Twm Jones the number 8 was not to be outdone also scoring 3 tries and adding 2 conversions for a personal tally of 19 points. The final try was scored by Elliott Pritchard who put in a very strong performance at outside half, putting in numerous tackles and turning over a lot of possession. Late in the second half Llandudno centre Murray scored his second try of the day which was converted to give a final score of 39 – 12. Despite there only being 3 scorers for Newtown this was a complete team peformance from the whole squad with the close support work of the team being key to the victory.

The final was a credit to both clubs with the teams showing great commitment and effort and the match, whilst being hugely competitive, was played in great spirit.

LLANDUDNO WIN ERYRI CUP

Llandudno 19 - 12 Pwllheli

HAT TRICK HERO MURRAY AND TEAM LIFT ANOTHER TROPHY!

Llandudno had to tough it out in the Eryri Cup final at Caernarfon on Sunday in order to clinch their second cup this season.

With personal messages of support and good luck sent from Wales and England legends Scott Quinnell and Wil Greenwood ringing in their ears and up against a Pwllheli side which Llandudno had previously beaten, Llandudno went in to the match with a slight edge, but this time they were up against a much stronger Pwllheli with key players back in the squad who along with the rest of the team made it an extremely tough game with neither side really ever having the upper hand until the final whistle.

Llandudno have made a habit of starting matches strongly this season and that again was the case as Llandudno made the perfect start as Captain Mickey Murray went on one of his familiar powerful runs, fending of tackles as he went to score his first try close to the posts which was as usual converted by Scrum Half Lloyd Evans.

Keeping a strong team like Pwllheli from scoring was always going to be a tough ask, and it wasn’t long before their hard work paid off and they ran in a converted try to make the score 7-7.

Llandudno shrugged off the score, managed to re-group and again through the excellent work from their dominant forwards, managed to secure possession from a line out, Scrum Half Lloyd Evans picked his pass brilliantly to Fly Half Shaun Harpin who along with Centre Jamie Moorhouse released Mickey Murray who had the pace to pull away from the Pwllheli defenders and score a try close to the touch line, with the conversion narrowly missed, Llandudno had a 12-7 advantage.

Pwllheli to their credit again showed their tenacity and with the last play of the first half ran in a try, again close to the line with the conversion missed, the half time score was 12-12.

With 25 minutes of rugby still left to play, it was obvious to all that whoever was to clinch the cup was going to have to play tough and uncompromising rugby along with the possibility of keeping their opponents scoreless. With the game being played largely in the middle of the field and scoring chances at a premium, it was beginning to look as though with 7 minutes left that the trophy was going to be shared, an admirable outcome, but not the one either team or member of the coaching staff wanted.

Despite this scenario, both teams still continued to play attacking rugby, with the Covering tackles of Llandudno’s back three of Greg Hall, Ryan Pike & Jack McGovern and the relentless recycling of possession by Llandudno’s forwards managing to keep Pwllheli from scoring.

With Pwllheli being held in their own 22 and their energy being drained through tackle after tackle, it was again Mickey Murray who somehow managed to run the ball straight through Pwllheli tacklers and to the delight of the rest of his team ground the ball for a try under the posts, with Lloyd Evans keeping his nerve and converting, Llandudno led 19-12 with 7 mins left.

What followed was surely one of the longest 7 minutes of Llandudno players, coaches and parent’s life as the heart was in the mouth every time Pwllheli regained possession and threatened to score, sadly for them it was not to be as the referee blew the final whistle ensuring that Llandudno had secured their second honour this season.

Man of the match was Captain Mickey Murray, asked by his coaches to again lead by example and score three tries, this was exactly what he did.

Special mention to Llandudno’s forward pack of Alwyn Lister, Luc Davies, Aaron Brookhouse, Seorsie Hughes, Josh Parry, Max Delacoe, Jacob Cornwell & Charlie Jones, some out position but again showing determination and strength to recycle the ball well and force some great turnovers in the match.

Also special mentions to the rest of the squad that travelled but did not play or were injured, Corey Irons, Jack Stone, Charlie Patterson, Adam Roberts, James French and Jack Johnson who all played their part in getting to the final and making Llandudno’s season so successful.

Thank you again to all the parents for constantly turning up this season and giving the team their great support.

Llandudno will now meet either Mold or last seasons champions Newtown in the North Wales Cup to see who will be crowned champions of North Wales.
