The Zutons’ got together in 2002, with their first release on Deltasonic being ‘Devil’s Deal’. At this point the band were a four piece, singer and guitarist Dave McCabe (formerly of Tramp Attack), guitarist Boyan Chowdhury, Russell Pritchard on bass and Sean Payne on drums – all playing in Liverpool bands before forming The Zutons.

The band’s unique sound is completed by saxophonist Abi Harding. Although not officially in the band at this early stage, Abi is credited on the debut single’s two b-sides – ‘Six Foot Man’ and the instrumental track, ‘Zutonkhamuun’.

When the second single was finally released, Abi officially completed the Liverpool five-piece. 2003’s ‘Creepin’ An’ A Crawlin’ is a step up from the debut, along with the b-side, ‘Rumblin’ Ramblin’ – both tracks highlighting the unique style and strength of Dave McCabe’s song writing.

Late 2003 saw the band decamping to London’s RAK Studios (along with ex-Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie producing). The sessions resulted in the band’s debut LP ‘Who Killed The Zutons?’ – an album that would go on to achieve great success.

The first single from the album, ‘Pressure Point’ was released in early 2004 and crashed in the UK Top 40 at number 19. The buzz of the Zutons was beginning to spread. Following this saw the band being picked as one of the NME’s bands to watch in 2004.

The follow-up, ‘You Will You Won’t’ again entered the UK charts highly, and the debut album reached number 13 in the UK album charts following rave reviews from all sections of the music press.

Summer 2004 saw the release of the third single from the album, ‘Remember Me’ – a perfect summer anthem for the festival season. Charting at a disappointing 39, the band preformed some memorable performances across the UK and European festivals – occasionally wearing those yellow boiler suits!

In July, the debut album was nominated as one of the 12 best British album for the Mercury Prize 2004, along with the best in British music over the passed 12 months. In the coming months the band have a new single – ‘Don’t Ever Think’ – and their biggest ever UK headline tour in October.

The Zutons – a band who aren’t afraid to give fans value for money – just listen to some of the b-sides – ‘Nobody Loves Me’, ‘Rumblin’ Ramblin’ and the free download only single ‘Haunts Me’ – just three tracks which could easily have made the debut album.

You’ll hear much, much more from this five piece – The Zutons – a band you can put your faith in.
