What does our group name, Dim Sum-mers, mean?

Dim Sum is a word for a type of Chinese food that comes in small, two bite pieces, often wrapped in wonton or dough, usually served (in restaurants at least) not as a single plate, but as an array of small serving sized choices.

Summer is the hot season (say June, July, and August), which is fading away during the month of September. Another way to say that something is fading away is to say that it is dimming (usually used to refer to light).

In English, when you have a single word that you want to use to mean a person or a group of people who is/are affiliated with that word and each other, you can stick an "er" (or "ers" if plural) at the end of the word. (Example: climb and climber or run and runners)

So: Dim Sum-mers could mean both folks who eat Dim Sum, and the time of year (September) when summer is fading (or dimming) away.

This part of the September 2003 DTC website is created to help pass the time while we wait for our little dumplings.  It includes a brief explanation of dim sum (Dim Sum for Dummies) for those that have never experienced it before.  Hopefully this will encourage you to try it.  This site also includes some dim sum recipes for us to try out.  More recipes will be added later.  If you have a dim sum recipe that you would like to share with the group please send them to [email protected]
