| The so-called escape proof Crown Point Jail. Dillinger strolled out of the jail like an honored guest on a tour. He took two hostages during his escape, released them unharmed with bus fare, and promised to send them something at Christmas, but never lived to see Christmas. |
| In order for a gang to be successful they needed guns, lots of them. Where did they get them? Many criminals had connections and bought guns from several under-world sources. While others like the Dillinger gang simply raided police departments and took all the guns, ammo, and bulletproof vests they needed. When John Dillinger was housed behind bars in the Lake County Crown Point jail, his lawyer Louis Pirquett ,helped to smuggle a wooden gun to him and a dramatic historical event unfolded. This event would help to make Dillinger the most celebrated criminal of the times. The Hoosier bandit knew that pulling off this escape would require brains and courage. Dillinger had both, which he proved as he easily bluffed his way out of the proclaimed escape-proof jail. He locked up close to a dozen guards and trustees, stole Sheriff's Lillian Holley's car, and completely disappeared.
