disease, other dementias and related disorders. Depression has been
noted as an accompanying symptom in many cases of dementia. Services
offered are: information for people with dementia and their carers;
counselling to provide care and support; carer education for family
and friends; multicultural and indigenous resources; library resources;
training courses on dementia for health professionals and care staff;
advice and support on behaviours of concern; advocacy for people
with dementia and their carers. A fee is charged for professional
training.

The BAS provides advice and assistance
in assessment, management and treatment of older persons with behaviours
of concern in country and metropolitan South Australia. It is recognised
that some behaviours of concern may be related to depression. The
service is free of charge when the person of concern resides in
a Commonwealth Government funded aged care facility, or is managed
by a Commonwealth Government funded community service, such as a
Community Aged Care Package. Referral can be initiated by telephone.

GROW has 60 groups throughout SA. The group meetings include sharing
and problem solving, learning about mental and emotional health

"Bridges to Recovery"
program:
For elderly patients with a principal
diagnosis of depression, without significant cognitive impairment.
The Unit offers fully structured therapeutic
day programs specially designed as ongoing treatment for elderly
patients identified as having recurrent or treatment resistant depression.
A "Step Down" concept whereby the amount of day patient
treatment is determined by the wellness of the patient. Attendance
may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, dependent upon the need and
all aimed at maintaining a high degree of wellness to keep them
functioning in the community with an enhanced quality of life. This
also allows low level monitoring of the person to detect any potential
deterioration.

The Elderly Assessment Unit:
For elderly patients with symptoms
of depression. Provides a multidisciplinary assessment and treatment
of older people who are experiencing illnesses such as depression,
memory loss or confusional states. A comprehensive assessment of
the functional abilities of each patient, (including physical, mental,
social and psychological), is conducted by the multidisciplinary
team, which meets on a weekly basis.
