For people suffering from psychiatric disorders, including depressive illnesses, not requiring hospitalisation. Cognitive Therapy and the Pivot Program provide an opportunity for people to learn more about their illness and develop coping skills to better manage their lives. Programs aim to have the client learn the relationship between thinking, feeling and behaviour; to develop problem solving strategies and be able to discriminate between irrational and rational thinking. Day Patient Program

For people with a principal diagnosis of depression in conjunction with a substance abuse disorder.

The Drug and Alcohol Unit is dedicated to providing specialised treatment and care for patients with alcohol and drug dependencies (including analgesics, narcotics, opiates, Benzodiazepines, nicotine and caffeine). The addictive / substance abuse behaviour may be a direct consequence of depression, or be a precipitant of depression. The Unit program offers patients a full assessment of their condition, detoxification and rehabilitation. Inpatient and Day Patient services are available. Contact the DON.

Mental Health Services for Older People is an assessment and treatment service for people over the age of 65 years (indigenous people over 55 years) who are experiencing serious mental health problems and whose needs are multiple and complex.

The Team comprises psychiatrists, medical officers, community nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologist, physiotherapist, chaplain and administrative staff.

In 1997, Mental Health Services for the Elderly was regionalised and realigned with general hospitals in the individual metropolitan areas. Case management may include short term co-ordination of assessment, recommendations, programs for loss and grief, counselling, advocacy, supportive counselling for carers, monitoring review of medication, ensuring continuity of care for long term sufferers.

 

Whilst the Community Teams were relocated as per the addresses given, the acute and extended care beds remain at Glenside for the Southern and Eastern areas, and at Hillcrest for Northern and Eastern teams.

Is a non-Government program which supports people from non-English speaking backgrounds with a mental health issue. The program offers support, information and advocacy to individuals and carers, and also a support group program. The program has a number of bilingual workers and will use interpreters when required.

The Program is for people over 65 years of age, who have been diagnosed as having depressive illness; where other day care activities are not appropriate.

The groups meet on a fortnightly basis on Fridays between 10.30 – 1.30. Carers are welcome. The philosophy of this program is based on empowerment, strengthening existing skills, building confidence and reintegration into the community. Provides a variety of indoor/outdoor activities. Emphasis is on members owning the club and participating in decision making. Membership of the club is available to both the clients of the service as well as older people in the community.
