| Shield bearing warriors, sometimes called shield figures or shield bearers are a distinctive rock art motif found throughout much of western North America. The composition consists of a circular body thought to represent a shield from which a head and/or feet are shown peering from underneath. Oftentimes the figures show arms or weapons protruding from behind the shield, suggesting a possible war or defense-related context. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Shield figures are found throughout western North America from southern Alberta in the north to southern New Mexico and Texas in the south. The motif extends from central Kansas in the east to southern Nevada in the west. Some areas are known for higher concentrations of sahield figures, including central montana and southern Alberta, the Unita Fremont area around Vernal, Utah, and the Galisteo Basin in central New Mexico. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| While minor regional differences exist, shield bearing figures show a high degree of uniformity throughout its distribution. One of the most notable differences is the lack of arms, weapons or other objects protruding behind shields in the Vernal area of northeastern Utah. Many of the differences that do exist appear to be largely stylistic, with regional and temporal styles varying far more than the content of the panels themselves. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
