At 350 kilometers long and 144 kilometers wide Taiwan sits 160 kilometers off the coast of China. With about 22 million people it is one of the most densly populated areas in the worl with 500 people per square kilometer. Most of the population lives near the coast due to mountains and hill covering two thirds of its surface.
Kaohsiung, the home of the famous Dick and Cowboy (sorry, I couldn't help myself) is in the southern part of Taiwan and also happens to the 4th largest seaport in the world. As far as citys go we're not exactly talking Paris but there are a few interesting things to do.
Kaohsiung, is the 2nd largest city in Taiwan with Taipei being the 1st. Kaohsiung is pretty much the industrialized version of Taiwan and isn't really on the tourist map. The map provided is really for westerners who are living in Kaohsiung and has locations of stores and places to buy familiar goods. The map is Adobe Acrobat so you can print it out in A4 format. If you don't have Acrobat click here and get it, don't worry it's free. Unlike the Chinese made English maps we have tried VERY hard to make sure the name on the map is the same spelling as the street sign. Unfortunatley some streets actually change spelling over the course of their run, for example Mintzu and Mintsu. The majority of streets do not have English names. If you live here you'll understand what we mean.
If you are looking for a nice beach Kenting is your best bet. Well to tell the truth in southern Taiwan, it's your only bet. Kenting has nice beaches and alot of thing to do around the water. You can rent waverunners and surfboards and all kinds of diving equipment. There are plenty of restraunts but two that stick out for great food are Warung Didi for Thai and Cactus Cafe for burgers and Mexican. As far as the pubs go there are plenty of places around to drink and dance but I have yet to see a pool table or a dart board anywhere. Kenting was also the 1st National park in Taiwan which is probably why they honor it by having a nuclear power plant next to it
