Character Classes
Diablo II has five character classes, and the Diablo II Expansion adds 2 more, with unique attributes and abilities. The character art has been improved, so that when your character puts a piece of equipment or armor on, you will see the difference in your character's appearance. With the addition of boots, gloves and belts, the image of your character can also change.

The character resistances of fire and lightning have been expanded to include cold and poison. And the attribute of Magic has been changed to Intelligence, which directly affects the skills that your character can learn.

Dying in Diablo II
If your character should happen to get killed, if you were killed by a monster, your character loses a percentage of your total gold (the amount on your character plus the amount in your stash).  In multiplayer games, the amount lost is the percentage equal to your character level, but not more than 20%. In single player games, no gold is taken from your stash, and 500 gold per character level is exempt from the death penalty.

In Nightmare and Hell games, an additional death penalty is taken: your character will lose some experience points, (5% in Nightmare and 10% in Hell) but will not drop down to a lower character level.

After dying, and restarting in town, your corpse will be found at the location where you died. Fight your way back, and click on your corpse to retrieve your equipment. If you should accidently exit the game before retrieving items from your corpse, it will be placed in town in the next game you start. However, Hardcore Characters cannot be reincarnated. For them, dead is dead.

Character Attributes
Each time your character levels up, you receive 5 attribute points and 1 skill point, which are up to your discretion to distribute.  Strength points affect your damage, dexterity points affect your ability to hit and avoid getting hit, Vitality points affect your life, and Energy point affect your mana.

After defeating Diablo, your character will receive a new title in front of their name.  Titles are assigned as shown below:
