Richer living
for single Christians:
A Singles Survival Guide, by Diane Kingston
Time Flies
- Review your dreams and fantasies for
your life. If you need to face up to realities and
disappointments you might be able to find a trained
counsellor to help you. Ask your minister or someone you
trust if they can recommend a Christian counsellor, or
refer to one of the agencies listed in the resources section of this guide.
- Jesus told us to "love the Lord
your God with all your heart, soul, mind and
strength" and to "love your neighbour as
yourself" (Mark 12 verses 31 and 32) Seek first the
kingdom of God and his righteousness". Remember that
being pre-occupied with finding a partner can be
self-centred, although a natural desire. Explore the
priorities in your life, bearing in mind that we are
called to demonstrate Gods love to other people in
the way we live.
- Recognise that being married is not
the solution to all your problems. When considering
commitment it is worth considering that while it might
solve some of them, it can create others. Additionally,
after marriage some things may remain the same, such as
the need to earn a living, housework, solitude or
isolation.
- If a relationship has ended, this can
be devastating, especially if it has been a long-term one
with thoughts of a future together. It can be even more
of a problem to anyone over the age when most of their
friends are getting married. It is very important to come
to terms with this situation and you may need a trained
counsellor to help you through this time.
- Coming to terms with, and accepting,
childlessness can be difficult for both women and men,
whether single or married. It may take the help of a
trained counsellor to help you grieve for the children
you didnt have.
- Meditate on "And we know that in
all things God works for the good of those who love him,
and who have been called according to his purpose"
(Romans 8 verse 28) and consider how you might respond to
it.
