In no way shape or form should a diabetic use fad diets, fasting diets or low carb, (like Dr. Atkins, or carb busters, the Zone etc.) no diet pills, But the upside is, you may use Slim Fast shakes as a meal replacement. Since each slimfast shake is 2 carb choices. So it�s a perfect snack as well. For examples of typical breakfasts snacks and lunches and dinners and their carb counts. Let�s see the below examples.
     In this typical breakfast we have
Coffee or tea. sweetened with Splenda and lightened with low carb coffee creamer.
2  egg- protein
1 slice of country ham 2 ounces
8 ounces of orange juice- 1 carb
2 slices of regular bread with some margarine or butter 2 carbs
This breakfast is low in carbohydrates.
We have coffee with splenda
2 slices of low carb whole wheat toast==== 1 carb
2 ounces of ham or bacon and two small eggs. All proteins
1 single serving orange juice box.
Total carbs for this breakfast 2
For snacks at anytime, those items that are 1 carb or zero carb are best. Scheduled snacks like mid morning, mid afternoon and before bed are between 1 and two carbs. You can have aprotein choice with any carb snack to make it healthier.
Above we have typical types of snacks.

1 Carbohydrate snacks examples: 15 grams = 1 carbohydrate choice.
6 whole wheat or butter or saltine style crackers
1 small aple or orange or banana
a single taco from taco bell
Creamy type soups like tomatoe, beef barley, noodle. 1 cup prepared.
1 cup cappucino or hot chocolate

NO Carbohydrate snacks examples: 0 or  5 grams or less  of carbohydrate is FREE!
1 cup clear broth with some veggies
2 tablespoons peanut butter
fresh nuts or seeds
Iced tea
Cheese
eggs
Tossed salad

Lunches are easy. Especially since fast foods are allowed!
Most fast foods meals have between 3 and 5 carbohydates, So its easy to count.
Lets understand that if you are eating at afast food place, the average serving of french fries is 2 carbs, the bun is usually 2-3 carbs. a drink has 3 carbs minimum. So as a rule if you choose a  complete meal, then always add a non sweet drink or diet soda. and count the entire meal as 5 carb choices.
As we see above, the hamburger or hot dog meal with diet drink are between 3-5 carb choices.
Sandwiches alone have 2, so does each slice of pizza.
A diabetic must learn to eat properly. A key to good control even if you run out of medication is to count your carbohydrates. As a general rule of nutrition 4 carbs per meal is a starting point. Depeneding on the severity of your diabets, or how low you want to stay, 2-5 carbs per meal is often given in a diabetic nutrition plan.
Timing is also key. You must eat at approximately the same time every day and about the same amount every time you eat.

Knowing what a carbohydrate is, is also key.  ALL fruits, grains( like oatmeal cereal, rice, grits corn,) milk and yogurt,  potatoes, breads and sugar are all  carbohydrates and are all metabolized the same way.
