Symphonic Band

All band students at DHS are members of the Symphonic Band.  During the school  year, students will build upon performance skills learned through 3 years of band participation at the middle school level.  The band performs 3 concerts throughout the year, and it also participates in the Kaw Valley League and KSHSAA State Music Festivals.  Students also have the opportunity to participate in individual festivals and competitions at the league, regional, and state level that will allow them to expand their musical horizons. In addition to the regular class schedule, all band members will have an additional 30 minute rehearsal on the last white day of each week as needed during the concert band season.  This is a yearly (1 credit) course that meets the Fine Arts Requirement for graduation.

Marching Wildcats

During the first quarter, the Symphonic Band becomes the Marching Wildcats.  The marching band performs at all home football games and in an adjudicated marching festival.  Each year the band also performs for the DeSoto Watermelon Parade, Johnson County Old Settler's Day Parade, and the televised American Royal Parade.  Students perform music in a variety of styles and learn marching fundamentals.  Many student leadership opportunities exist that allow for further individual development.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is a relatively new addition to the band program at DHS.  Jazz Band meets Tuesday through Friday mornings from 7:00 AM – 7:45 AM.  Students in the Jazz Band will learn to play music in a variety of styles including Swing, Bebop, Latin, Funk, and Rock.  Students will also learn jazz theory, jazz history, and improvisational techniques.  The Jazz Band will present at least one concert and perform at a regional adjudicated jazz festival.  The jazz band will also perform for various school and community events.  Enrollment in the jazz band is by audition and / or by permission of the instructor.  Jazz Band members must also be enrolled in Symphonic Band. Exceptions may be made for students who play guitar, bass, and piano.  The Jazz band counts as a semester course (1/2 credit) that will meet the requirements in the Fine Arts Department.

Pep Band

Every member of the DHS Bands performs with the pep band during the basketball season.  Students are required to perform for a set number of games.  Students who choose to perform for more than the required number of games earn bonus points toward a band letter.
