Arranged marriages have been a part of India since ancient
times and are still in practice today. In an arranged marriage, parents
find a groom for their daughter or a bride for their son. Generally, these
matches take place through parents? social contacts or matchmakers, so
the parents play a key role.
But times have changed. In the last twenty to thirty years, there has been a widespread exodus from the villages to the cities. Men have moved away from their homes in search of better education and employment, and more women are working, which increases their opportunities to find spouses on their own. These marriages are referred to as love marriages. Still, parental approval remains important; for example, if a girl wants to marry a man from her office, it is important that her parents approve of that man. This documentary will focus on the continuing significant role that the parents play in an Indian marriage. |
