Drifting Techniques

There are basically two ways of drifting a car. The first is by inducing an oversteer, and the second by initiating an understeer. Preffered techniques of drifting vary from driver to driver and depend on wether they are driving a "front wheel drive" or a "rear wheel drive" car but chances are it is the oversteer drift which you will come to know and love. Most people are just plain scared of going into an understeer drift.

During an oversteer drift, both rear tires have no traction and are just swinging along being led and dragged by the front tires. This means that there is still control over the car via the front tires. Needless to say this kind of controlled sliding has its risks but it looks really cool and is the entirely what the sport of drifting is based on.

When caught in an understeer drift on the other hand, its the front tires that lose traction thus leaving the driver with no control of ther car. The only way of regaining control would be to slow the card down enough until the front tires regain traction or to point the front tires in the right direction and throttle out of the corner(note - this only works if the car has very high horsepower and torque).
