| Detective is a titled position indicating specialty within the department. It exists with three levels Detective 1, Detective 2 (senior detective), Inspector. Most officers who are detectives hold the actual rank of Sgt or Lt. It is possibble to advance to higher ranks without ever becoming a detective. Most units are headed by either a Lt. or Lt Cmdr while Captain is a rank usually reserved for Precinct heads. With that said, some special units, SWAT and Bomb Squard are headed by captains and some career cops also manage the rank before or right at retirement. There is only one chief to the city who is appointed by the mayor. He serves as the commander of all the city's officers and has mostly dealings with the mayor and the captains of the department. Under normal circumstances, no one below the rank of Lt. would ever be called to see the Chief, barring some very public fiasco. |
