Tools of the Trade

"These are the tools I use"

  • Just a brush. Nothing special
  • 2mm Sanford Drafting Pencil
  • .5mm Mechanical Pencil
  • Koh-I-Nor Graphite Pencil
  • Sanford "Tuff Stuff" Erasor
  • Lead Pointer for 2mm drafting pencil
  • Staedtler Erasor
  • TypeWriter Erasor
  • Industrial paper towel in heat shrink
  • Artists chamois
  • Blending Stump
  • Tortillion
  • Cuticle Tool for small blending
  • General's kneaded putty
  • Wal-mart adhesive putty
  • Blu-tac Adhesive putty
  • Pink Pearl erasor
  • Piece of felt

This is not an all inclusive list! I happen to be a tool and supply freak, so I have a number of things that I didn't list here. These are just the items that I use the most.

  • The paper I use is Strathmore Bristol Smooth. I have the vellum, but I haven't used it very much. My first step is to get the subjects outline on the paper. To do this I will either trace, use the grid method, or project on the wall. Once I have an accurate line drawing, then I will block in the shaded areas. From there I will start to blend, and to detail the rest of the drawing until I consider it finished.
