My experiences with customizing model horses have been interesting. I started with the idea of just seeing if I could create horses like the ones I had seen at my first couple of model horse shows. At first all I did was just paint. I didnt have the confidence or the materials to cut and move any of the models. One day, with the words of an unknown model horse artist ringing in my ears, I picked up a brush, some paints, and an old brown Family Arabian Stallion. After having read some articles in the magazine Just About Horses, I felt I had enough information to begin. My first creation wasnt the best, but he wasnt all that bad either. I grabbed a book on Arabians, and proceeded to flip amongst the pictures of the greys. After a few minutes, I took some acrylic paints, mixed them together, and started painting. I produced a dark dapple-grey with some heavy shaded dappling on his face, neck, shoulders, hips and legs.
