Live CD is an operating system that can be booted from a CD or DVD in minutes. The operating system is executed directly from the CD without requiring any installation to the hardware but you can still use the hardware because the CD automatically detects it. The system returns to the previous operating system after ejecting the CD and rebooting the computer. The Live CD can be used on any laptop or desktop computer.

The Live CD can be very significant tool in the security field. The live CD can be used as a rescue system for analyzing systems/networks or as a working environment. If the system breaks down or refuses to boot, the error can be fixed on the local system using the Live CD. The current version of Knoppix Live CD includes network analysis tool Nessus, diagnostic tools like Eathereal, a network penetration testing utility, and network security tools that can help with fixing the problem.

The software can be downloaded for free. The software on the CD falls under General Public License. It means that the CD can be copied, modified, redistributed and even resold without any restriction, as long as the recipient receives the same license. The software is available from their original providers. The primary function of a Live CD include desktop, OS replacement, education, rescue, clustering, security, home entertainment, gaming, medical, diagnostics, firewalls, forensics and servers.
