Lab 7A-1:Windows Access Control/Encryption

Purpose

Exploring Microsoft Windows XP Access Control Mechanisms and to use the Windows Encrypting File Systems.

Tools

Windows Explorer

Procedures

- To share a folder, right click the folder you wish to share in Windows Explorer --> Properties --> Sharing --> check Share this folder on the network button
- To encrypt data, right click file or foolder in Windows Explorer --> Properties --> click on the General tab --> Advanced --> check Encrypt contents to secure data button

Results

I was able to map a network drive to another computer and share a folder. I created a test file that I encrypted, but my lab partner was not able to decrypt it since she didn't have a key ( certificate ) for decryption.

Time

30 min

Reflection

These tools are useful when sharing data across network. Even if somebody unauthorized gets a hold of the data he/she could not do anything with it because it is encrypted, and cracking the code would take too much time to try to do it.
