Lab 2A-5: SNMP Enumeration Using Windows

Purpose

SNMP Enumeration uses SNScan to control and monitor SNMP major components for network management.

Tools

SNScan

Procedures

Run SNScan. Enter the IP range for your subnet in the Start IP and End IP text boxes. Click the arrow to verify the IP range to scan. Click the check boxes for ports to be scanned. Make sure the community string is set to public. Click blue arrow to start the scan. Right-click SNMP Service and click Properties.

Results

The administrator can use the Trap service; define the Traps to be used, and where the data from the Traps is sent. He can also change community name from public to something else, which is strongly recommended to avoid easier-than-necessary enumeration of SNMP data traveling on the network. The administrator can dictate from which hosts SNMP data can be accepted.

Time

15 min

Reflection

SNScan is a very useful tool because you can check if the SNMP service is running or not. As an network security administrator you dont want to have SNMP service running for no good reason because you always want to limit the features and services.
