Lab 2A-1:Port Scanning Utilities for Windows


Purpose

To determine which ports are active at which addresses

Tools

SuperScan and NetBrute

Procedure

Download Superscan from http://www.foundstone.com/index.htm?subnav=resources/navigation.htm Start it and enter host IP address (-range). Chose the port for which you want to scan the computer for and press Scan button (triangle on the botton of the screen). Download NetBrute from http://www.rawlogic.com/netbrute/. Run it and select the ports tab. Enter the IP range and press scan.

Results

Superscan found all ports on my local computer. Only one UDP port was open. Netbrute didn�t find any ports.

Reflection

Port scanning tools are useful for detecting open port on the computer that could be used by the attacker to gain the control over it. There are open ports that are suspicious or that no program uses, these ports should be closed in order to maintain security of the computer.
