| Lunch I ate at a very nice restaurant on the road between the Colosseum and the Domus Aurea (right in front of the gates), and the I visited the *** Colosseum. It is best to take a guided tour. Take care to take the official guided tour inside and not the ones outside. The Colosseum is Rome's biggest amphitheatre - and thus was the Roman Empire biggest amphitheatre - was built in 80 and could sit up to 80,000 people. On the lower sits sat the senators (on marble sits) - above them on stone sits set the commoners - according to their lines of work (the entrance was free and each group of workers had a different area of sitting). The women stood on the top on wooden balconies. The various gates of the Colosseum were marked by numbers and the tickets were marked accordingly. Only the Emperor's gate was not marked (as he did not need a ticket). |
