Day 9: Regent's Park, Baker St. & Marylebone:
Day 9 -- Tuesday -- 17/12/02 -
Regent's Park, Baker St. & Marylebone:
I started today's walk in Park Crescent, and walked into Regent's Park. I walked along the Inner Circle. I planned to go along the Outer Circle, but the park was bigger then I expected it to be, so I entered the Inner Circle and looked at Queen Ann's Gardens - I saw the Rose Garden, and the Sunken Garden which were nice and had flowers, even though it was winter.
When I got out of the park I went to
*** Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. At the beginning of the museum you enter the "Garden Party" with many actors and celebrities. Later you see the royal family and many politicians, and in the dungeons you can see the original death masks of the French royal family, and the original guillotine knife that beheaded Mary Antoinette. In The London Planetarium there is a nice show about flying from the solar system to the edge of the galaxy.
From there I went to the London Walks Sherlock Holmes tour (the Marylebone are tour), Which was nice but not as good as the other tours. The guide explained that originally Baker St. was shorter -- so there could not be 221 B Baker St. later another street was added -- but this time 221 B is now in the Abby National Building -- and not where the Sherlock Holmes Museum is (which is actually in 225).
From the stories it is obvious that Conan Doyle hadn't meant it to be there -- in one story a visitor said to Holmes that he couldn't find a cab from the Tube station so he had to walk -- and the Tube is right across the St. from where 221 is today.
The tour went along Merylbone St. was has great cake shops an bakeries as well as other expansive shops on it.
After the tour I went to
** The Sherlock Holmes Museum -- which is small and nice. In the museum the rooms of Holmes and Dr. Watson are recreated.
