Salisbury and Stonehenge:
I took a guided tour to see both Salisbury and Stonehenge.
The tour started by a train ride from London Waterloo Train Station -- about two hours ride, and we saw the great Cathedral in Salisbury - built 700 years ago. The tower above the cathedral was built about 100 years later.
In the Cathedral there is the grave of a knight, Sir William Longspee, who was one of the witnesses to the signing of the Magna Carta, by King John. A copy of the Magna Carta still exists in the cathedral, and I saw it.
The knight later sailed on to fight in the crusades, while leaving his wife behind, promising her to return within a year. As two years passed and he didn't return, and as the wife was very reach, the Lord Chancellor decided that the wife should remarry - and the husband should be his son or nephew. She refused but at the end she gave in. Of course the knight came back on the evening of the wedding feast. The Chancellor told him the feast would be for his return, but he died a week later. A few years ago - the body was checked and found to be poisoned of Arsenic poisoning. (The widow refused to remarry and went to a convent taking all her money with her).
I walked a bit in the old city and looked at the nice shops around. The Old city gates still close every night at 23:00 to keep strangers out.
From there we took a bus ride to see Stonehenge. It took 3000 people more then a year to carry each of the stones from a quarry in Wales.
