Day 22: Bath:
Day 22 -- Monday -- 30/12/02
               Bath:
To see Bath I took a London Walk's tour that started at Paddington Station.
The train ride is about two hours. Bath sits above the River Avon. Avon is a word in Saxon, which means River.
It didn't stop raining the whole day.
The guide took us to see the nice buildings - all built of the same stone called Bath Stone - which gives the city a nice Beige color. We saw the houses in which the Nobility stayed and was entertained (in The Assembly Rooms) while they came to bathe (fully clothed) in the water and drink it. After lunch at a nice Pub called the Huntsman, we saw the cathedral, and The Roman Bath - which are lit with torches in the night. While the fumes of the hot water rises up from the pool, the rain falls down on it. It takes about an hour and a half to hear all the commentary of the audio guide - which is very interesting.
I decided not to drink the water from the pool - as the Roman lead piping is still in use.
Not only the rich visited Bath - the poor people as well could visit. Charities paid for housing of the poor - but they had to leave a 3 deposit - in case they would die - and then the deposit would become the burial fee.
The Assembly Rooms is where the nobility played cards and danced but wasn't allowed to drink alcohol (so they went outside to drink and came back in happier then when they left).
