In the reign of the Emperor Hsuan-te of the Ming dynasty four Giraffes were sent as tribute, or as a present, from Annam or thereabouts. During the reign of Yung-loh some Zebras were sent to Peking from Ts'ao Hsien in Shan Tung. These animals are described as being like a white tiger with black stripes, with very long tails.
