September 2001 marked the start of a new chapter in my life.  After 5 years of teaching others English in Japan, I decided to further my own education by doing a Masters degree.. My choice of university was the University of London's  School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), where I did an MA in International Studies and Diplomacy.

Before coming, I was worried that keeping up would be difficult since I've been away from school for so long; however, the year went quite well. My three courses - International Relations, International Law, and General Diplomatic Studies and Practice (GDSP) - and their seminars were all interesting and  challenging, and the diversity of my classmates also added  greatly to the quality of my academic and social lives. I also completed the program by doing my dissertation on the influence and role of the relatively new World Social Forum on international politics.
As for London itself, it's not bad. My first impressions were that this city is scruffy, dirty, and grey. Well, I still have those impressions, but I've learned to see past them and enjoy all the variety and diversity the city has to offer. Being here has also proved to be a great jumping off point for visiting other parts of Europe for relatively cheaply. Despite having to live on a student budget, I've managed to see many parts of western and southern Europe.

Of course, my time in London would have been dull and empty without the all the friends and people I met while here. Unfortunately I don't have enough photos scanned to put everyone online.
