part 1
My first two years were spent in Hiroshima City on the JET Program.  I taught English conversation at one high school and several junior high schools.  The city was nice, the food delicious, and the people fun, but after two years I needed a change.  Hiroshima is too provincial and didn't offer enough exposure to the mainstream of Japan.

A little later I found a new job via the internet in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto Prefecture. I was excited to move to Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital and a big city. At least I thought I was moving there. Fukuchiyama is actually a 2 hour train/car ride from Kyoto and the other big cities in the area. I was disappointed to find that out, but decided to make the town my jumping off point to Osaka and the big cities.

My first impressions of Fukuchiyama: small, cold, and remote. Over time, however, I came to appreciate small town life with its mountain sunsets, fresh food, clean water, and friendly people. Still, I can't say that I'd do it again.
