The Genesse Valley Food History Guild was started in February of 2006 by some of the Open Hearth Cooks at the Genesee Country Village and Museum* in Mumford, New York. Though we shared our love and knowledge of historic foodways with hundreds of people on any given day, we wanted to be able to do it on a more one to one basis, especially with those who share that same love and interest in all things food related. A food history guild seemed to be the answer.
In the past two years we have had monthly meetings, except in the summer months, bylaws have been set up and officers elected. Most meetings have had a speaker, addressing specific topics. Past topics have been Vanilla, Vinegar, Ketchup, and Mustard. More speakers are planned. A Research File has been started, which includes documented history on many food subjects, such as the topics presented by the guest speakers and more. In January 2007, we established a library for the use of our membership. Future plans are to continue to build the food files, library, take more field trips and to build our membership. |
We may live without poetry, music, and art: We may live without conscience, and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks. |
