Texture mapping applies an image to a surface, as if it were gift wrap on a package. I made the image below using Corel Painter, then wrapped it around a bierstein that I modeled in Autodesk Maya.

For more tactile realism I used the same grayscale image as a bump map, which adds shadows and highlights according to the values in the image. While the texture map is "painted" onto the beer mug, the bump map interacts with the light sources to depict indentations and protrusions on the surface. The same geometry with different texture and bump maps makes a different mug.
