During a two-week intensive California State University Summer Arts residency course, I
sculpted this character in clay, then made an electronic duplicate of
it in the computer using an Immersion MicroScribe
digitizer device. Touching points on the clay marquette with the MicroScribe
stylus read these positions into the computer as a three dimensional mesh.
The next phase was "rigging" the face for animation using Autodesk Maya. A facial rig is a set of manipulation handles for controling the charater's expressions. My rig included lattices for shifting the enormous eyes, wire deformers to open and close the mouth and eyelids, and bones for moving the ears, puckering the eyebrows, and wiggling the nose.
