WELCOME TO THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA

ROANOKE ISLAND

These pages will be an ever changing story of the Outer Banks. I will update it whenever I have time and the urge to do a little work. Things may change daily or remain the same for several months. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a long chain of barrier islands stretching from the Virginia state line, southward to the Beaufort/Morehead City area. The entire length is more than 70 miles long, and ranges from a few hundred feet wide to several miles wide in places. Spaced along the islands are five lighthouses, several wildlife refuges, some large resort towns, several small villages, and miles of low sandy beaches. The Outer Banks is a land of constant change. Every storm that hits the area, whether summer hurricanes or winter nor'easters, changes the scenery. New inlets are formed and old ones disappear. This is evidenced by the fact that Bodie Island is now a separate island only by name. It is firmly attached at the north end to the mainland. When Hurricane Isabel hit the banks in late 2003, it cut an inlet which would have created a new island were it not for the fact that tons of sand were pumped in after the storm by man, to fill the void, and allow the highway to be rebuilt.

Just a few miles off the coast, two Atlantic Ocean currents meet, creating ocean turmoil and the creation of ever moving sandbars.
