| The Outer Banks are are a string of islands, with one major highway, NC12 running almost the entire length. A local saying says, "Highway 12, one route on and one route off." In order to get around, it requires an elaborate system of bridges and ferry boats. At the north end, in the town of Corolla, NC12 just ends at the beach. The only way to proceed north is by 4-wheel drive vehicle on the beach. The rest of the way south the road continues over the bridges and ferries.
