| Defeat in the Second War of Schleswig left deep marks in the Danish national identity as they were forced to surrender Schleswig-Holstein (the northmost of the 16 Bundeslnder in Germany) to Prussia. Denmark adopted a neutrality policy, staying neutral during WWI. During the late 19th century, the Danes developed their economy, becoming a constitutional monarchy and improving farming techniques. In 1918, Iceland gained independence from Denmark. During WWII, Germany occupied Denmark. In 1943, martial law was declared and many Jews fled to Sweden. British forces liberated Denmark in 1945. Denmark became a member of NATO after the war. | |||||||||||||||||||
