Carmichael Forefathers

I never realized how many Carmichaels there are in the United States! For the purposes of this family tree, I am not going to trace roots back to Scotland to the first millenium. See my "Links" section on the Home Page if you're interested in finding out more.

A website I found entitled "Caledonia Highlanders" writes: "IN THE LATE 1700'S A NUMBER OF SCOTTISH FAMILES EMIGRATED TO AMERICA FROM SCOTLAND. DETERMINED TO FARM IN NEW AMERICA THEY TRAVELLED BY FOOT SOME 200 MILES FROM JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. AND FOUNDED TOWNS LIKE, INVERNESS, YORK, FOWLERVILLE AND CALEDONIA IN NEW YORK. MANY OF THEIR DECENDENTS TRAVELLED WEST AS AMERICA EXPANDED. THESE ARE THE FAMILIES OF THE ORIGINAL SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS THAT SETTLED THE CALEDONIA AREA AND A CHRONOLOGY OF WESTWARD EXPANSION." (See this wonderful website!)

Our forefathers came from Perthsire, Scotland. James Carmichael was born in 1763 and married Effie McVean. They settled at first in Johnstown, NY and ended up in Caledonia, NY. They had 6 children, one of whom is a direct ancestor.

John J. Carmichael was born in May 1791. His first marriage was to Isabel McMartin, who died in 1817 during childbirth with daughter Isabel McMartin Carmichael. After his first wife died, John married Mary Campbell and had 10 children with her!

James J. Carmichael was a farmer in Caledonia. He also had 2 marriages. His first was to Catherine Sinclair, who died in 1870 after giving James 3 boys:

James married Jane Isabell McIntyre in July 1871 to give his 2 remaining boys a new mother and ended up having another 5 boys! View Carmichael Group Photos
