Theres a little store in Baltimore thats waiting to be the one stop
shop for your next Halloween costume, theme party or retro night on
the town.
Killer Trash, located in the famed Fells Point neighborhood of Charm City, is
packed to the ceiling with womens and mens vintage clothes from the 50s, 60s and 70s. From flashy dresses to cowboy boots to costume jewelry, this store even boasts a handsome collection of tutus.
Though most of the clientele come in with a purposewardrobe people
needing to dress stars for movies such as 12 Monkeys, Serial Mom and
other flicks by Baltimore director John Waters--its also a great place to
peruse for a lively piece thatll have everyone asking where you got
dressed.
Owner Elaine Ferrare says people are attracted to Killer Trash because the prices are rightthe average is about $12-20and customers dont have to dig around to find the really good stuff. She only sells items in the best condition, which means no stains or tears.
Ferrare constantly scours estate sales and vintage warehouses for
eye-popping pieces. Everything I do is for the shop, she said.
Every vacation she takes is dedicated to the pursuit of new items for the store. On road trips, she questions the locals and when they warn her to stay away from certain bad neighborhoods, thats exactly where she heads.
Its that kind of excited, hands on attitude that draws many people to Killer Trash. Employee Amber Walters said theyre really good at dressing people, so if a customer is looking for a costume and doesnt know where to start, the girls take over and put together a fabulous outfit.
But be careful, Ferrare warns, Killer Trash becomes an addiction for some people. Though she sees lots of tourists come in and out of her door, she has devoted customers who come back once a month, once a week or even every day. Ferrare has often heard customers leaving the store tell her, we have so much fun in here.
We hope you will too.
It takes dedication:
Killer Trashs owner Elaine Ferrare is a real testament to the dedication it takes to realize a dream. Ferrares store was reincarnated five times in Las Vegas before she settled on her current place in Baltimore. She started in the 70s selling the fashion of the time, but just couldnt get it right. About 12 years ago it came down to an issue of survival and Ferrare knew she had to do something and stick with it.
Thats when she opened Killer Trash. Its initial location was off the beaten
trail of Fells Point about five blocks from its current address. She offered
up all the old clothes from her basement that shed collected over the
years and the store just took off. About three years ago she moved Killer Trash
to its current spot on Fells Points main strip and has since enjoyed even
more success.
