The hippo has an offset axle at the back which causes a delightful up and down motion when pushed. The jaws are hinged and are forced open by lugs set into the inside of the front wheels.

I have made 6 of these elephant puzzles. Cut from beech then the backing piece is planed down by about 1/4" which leaves the puzzle slightly proud. Great fun to make but takes an age to finish. Dyed with a water based dye finished with Danish oil.

The alphabet fish is also numbered on the reverse side. Made from beech and currently unfinished.

The Ziggidy Man: I have made about a dozen of these from what wood I have lying around. Looks very straight forward but it is actually quite tricky to get the arms and legs just the right length so that the man does not get stuck on the way down.

The Nameplate: Cut from 1/4" oak faced ply with the backing piece rotated by 90 degrees to give contrast. Design taken from Clip Art and adapted. I have 2 more of these to make and are one of the reasons our newborns have short names. Finished with a thinned out poly varnish
