SOCS is a system that allows roleplaying during space combat. The emphasis is on space opera instead of realism -- maneuvers which make sense in real life might not be allowed, while unrealistic actions that are seen in space opera shows are encouraged. SOCS was first published in GURPS Lensman and then in Gurps Compendium II.
I've tried to translate in SOCS terms every type of humanx starship I know.
In SOCS There are three main ship types:
FIGHTERS (small spacecraft with fixed-mounted weapons), [ U.C.Stingships, Corvettes, Aann Attack-ships ]
CUTTERS (medium-sized spacecraft with limited weaponry), [ Frigates, Destroyers and Scouts ]
SHIPS OF THE LINE (large, heavily-armed spacecraft). [ Light Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers and Dreadnoughts ]Unarmed ships are called:
Shuttles [ light shuttles, medium shuttles and heavy shuttles ], without KK-Drive
Yachts [ Rental Yachts and Private Yachts ]
Freighters [ Tramp Freighters, Passenger Freighters and Heavy Freighters ]HUMANX Weapons in SOCS
Disruption beam cannons
Interstice laser cannons
- light range: LONG damage: LIGHT
- medium range: LONG damage: HEAVY
- heavy range: LONG damage: GREAT
Missile tubes
- light range: LONG damage: LIGHT
- medium range: LONG damage: LIGHT ( at SHORT range the damage is HEAVY)
- heavy range: LONG damage: HEAVY
Paralysis beam cannons ( effective only vs unarmed ships )
- light range: SHORT damage: LIGHT
- medium range: SHORT damage: HEAVY
- heavy range: SHORT damage: GREAT
Particle beam cannons
- light range: SHORT damage: LIGHT
- medium range: SHORT damage: HEAVY
SCCAM missile (only U.C. Stingships and U.C. Corvettes )
- light range: SHORT damage: LIGHT
- medium range: SHORT damage: HEAVY
- heavy range: SHORT damage: GREAT
- range: SHORT damage: STARK
As Defensive shields absorb incoming firepower, they gain Damage Levels (DLs). They start at "none", and work their way up from to , then go to "off" or non-functional. Civilian KK ships use Standard shields completely effective only against space debris but useless against weapons ( Defence Factor = None).WEAPONS VS. DEFENSIVE SHIELD:

Recharge: the shield will recharge normally at the end of the turn
Down: means the screen instantly collapsed and/or the armor is penetrated
0 : No change in shield/armor status
-1 : shield/armor strength is shifted down by 1 level

(*) these are my creations, so they are "non official" types.N.B. In this system the civilian starship Gloryhole ( no Defence Factor ) is equipped with a MEDIUM laser cannon . The Gloryhole was very lucky when confronted two Aann Destroyers , Aanns underestimated the little yacht and didn't raise their Defensive shields and at short distance the Gloryhole crew fired with their hidden las cannon probably scoring a critical success :
One Destroyer suffered a GREAT damage and exploded, the other Aann ship quickly raised his shields but suffered the effects of surprise. ( based on events described in Alan Dean Foster's novel "The Tar Ayim Krang" ) .
