Deco joined FC Porto from city rivals Salgueiros towards the end of the 1999 season. Porto, at the time, were in the running to complete their unprecedented 5th consecutive league title. Deco was not forced to "wait in the wings", rather Fernando Santos trusted his latest Brazilian almost immediately. He did not score a goal in his opening 6 games with Porto but did begin to show his flair and ball control.

Deco was originally acquried by Benfica from Corinthinans Alagoano in Brazil. Benfica felt that they did not need him and loaned him out to their feeder club, Alverca. At Alverca Deco scored 13 goals and was often the critical figure of the match. Benfica felt that he was not needed and offloaded him to Salgueiros where FC Porto waisted no time in negociating with their city rivals.

Deco is hands down one of the greatest foreign stars to ever grace FC Porto. He has won a trophy with the club every year since joining and is on the cusp of joining some of Europe's biggest teams. 2002/3 is certain to be Deco's final year at FC Porto and we hope that he goes out with a bang.Marco Amorim(fcporto-online)

Well 2002/03 was not his last year as in 2003 Deco was a big part of the Porto treble winning team, as they won the domestic league,portugal cup and the biggest one the Uefa cup beating Celtic in Seville. Deco then made his day view for Portugal scoring the winner against Brazil, and since that he has been a regular starter for team Portugal, he was part of the team in this summer's Euro in Portugal in witch they made it all the way to the final but lost to Greece. Deco also in 2004 won the Uefa Champions league with F.C Porto and domestic league again.
Two european titles for F.C Porto in 2 years meant his days at F.C Porto were reallyc omming to a end as he won so much at the club and a new adventure was in the plans.

After euro2004, Porto did indeed sell Deco to Barcelona. rejecting offers from Chelsea and Byren Munich as the player wanted and dreamed of Barcelona and FCP board granted a player that did so much for them that wish, as they sold him to Barcelona even tough they had higher offers. Deco already has shown class at Barcelona scoring in his day view to win the Barcelona cup and then also on his other day view in the Champions league, Deco also scored and was the MVP. He now is up for the golden boot award and looks set to win that, after just recently winning UEFA MVP and also best midfielder.
