1. Divide students into groups of 2 or 3 depending on number of students in classroom.
2. Print “Famous Virginians List” and assign each group a famous Virginian or you could have the groups draw the names from a hat.
3. Students work in the class in their groups to find 10 facts on the famous Virginian they were assigned. Students can use the internet, I have included sites or they may do their own searches. I have also had students use information in their textbooks and any other reference materials to find facts on their Virginians.
4. Students draw a life size drawing of the famous person on white bulletin board paper (Hint: have one of the students lay down on top of the paper and the other group members can trace an outline, this helps them get started). The students should list the facts about their famous Virginian around the drawing. After the portrait is finished, display it in the hallway. We call our hall “Hall of Fame”.
5. Print teacher rubric to use for grading the projects.
* Allow 4 days of class time from start to finish.
