Introduction

This page started off as adedicated Website for my Internet friends. It has,
however, developed differently and I have made a separate Website for my friends.
I will use this page to tell you more about Africa and give some links to
"my world". This is not intended as a travel guide but at the request of some
friends I will try to give you some indication of the beauty of this great continent.
I will start of with South Africa, although I would display some pictures of the rest of Africa as well.
Now South Africa is known for it sunshine and the beautiful weather. It is a country that is on the dry side and water is at a premium. Rain in most of the country comes as afternoon thunderstorm. The people love their sport. This is to a large degree as a result of the wonderful climate of the country as a whole.
There is a winter rainfall area, which are the Western Cape, and the coastal area of the Cape. There is a semi desert area, which cover a lost part of the Northern Cape. The green hills of the Eastern Cape and the Kwa-Zulu Natal where we have a sub-tropical climate and beautiful green hills. The Free State has grassy "Pampas". It is only on the easternside where it is bordering Lesotho where there are some mountains. Gauteng is the financial heartland of South Africa. The North West province includes the bush-veld areas. Northern Province borders Zimbabwe and is rather warm, but beautiful region and then there is Mapumalanga, previous know as the Low-veld. This is a warm and beautiful area and also housing the Kruger National Park and other private game ranches.

Some general Information.

The money used is the Rand. The value fluctuates widely but it is around R14 to One British Pound and R10 to USA$1. One hundred Cents = R1.
Distance is measured in Kilometer and the speed limit is normally 60 kilometer per hour in the towns and 100 kilometer per hour on most roads out side of the towns. On the main road the speed is limited to R120 kilometer per hour. Speed limits are displayed and it is enforced.
We drive on the left side of the road and although the road network is very good, the condition of some of the road is bad.
Degrees Celsius are used to display temperatures.
English can be used almost every where in the country and for my Dutch friends, you will be understood, provided that you talk slow.
The country has eleven official languages.

When Traveling in South Africa

Crime in the country is very high and it is therefore essential that some basic precautions are taken.
Be always alert.
Don't wear any valuable jewelry where people can see it.
Don't walk alone in quiet areas.
When driving, keep your doors locked and the windows closed in build-up areas.
Don't flash money around.
Don't go into the suburbs on your own, rather ask the police whether and area
is safe to enter.
Be on the watch out for the friendly trickster, they will surely take your money.
There are many tricks they use which could be from a card game to some fast money
making racket with precious stones. You will lose your money.
Don't walk alone at night in any area where there are not lots of people, like
the shopping centers.
Ladies should be very careful, as the rape statistics in the country is pretty bad.
