Obituary - Joseph F. Rice (November
22, 1958)
The death of Joseph Franklin Rice, 89, occurred Saturday at the residence,
707 W. End
Avenue. He was born in Putnam County, IN., on December 18, 1868,
the son of Peter and
Elizabeth Miles Rice. His wife, formerly Sarah Ann Clark, died
in 1905.
Children surviving are Mrs. Emma Newell of Paris, Mrs. Bessie Cunningham
of Champaign,
John Thomas Rice of Charleston and Mrs. Mae Newell of Marshall.
There are 15
grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Dr. C. C. Nordling will officiate at the funeral to be held at one o'clock
Tuesday afternoon at
the Ward Sutton funeral home. Burial will be a the Dunlap Cemetery,
east of Marshall.
Obituary - W. R. Rice
William Robert Rice, son of Peter and Elizabeth Rice, was born September
14th, 1860 in
Putnam County, IN. He grew to manhood there and was united in
marriage to Fannie Bell
Baldwin, daughter of William G. and Sarah Baldwin, February 25th, 1883.
To this union four
children were born, Effie May, at the age of seventeen, and William
Jr., at the age of three
months, having preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Fannie Bell; a son, Albert
Marion of Pritchett,
Colorado; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Sigler of Missouri Valley, Iowa
eight grandchildren, and
one great grandchild.
Of these Joe and Manuel have made their home in recent years with their
grandparents and
administered their love and devotion throughout the illness of their
grandfather.
Mr. and Mrs. Rice came to Logan from Indiana in 1855 and have lived
in Harrison County
ever since except for a brief time spent in Fort Morgan, Colorado.
For the past 40 years
they have had their residence in Missouri Valley.
Mr. Rice was united with the Christian Church when a young man, being
baptized in the
winter through an opening cut in river ice. His faith in God
and the Golden Rule was
expressed in his every day life to his family and his fellowman.
He was a carpenter by trade and leaves many monuments of his life's
work that will stand the
test of time. He was scrupulously careful as a mechanic and a
man of business integrity,
which virtues, added to his Christian faith, gave him much satisfaction
as he approached "the
valley of the shadow of death." The exact measure of his life
was 77 years, 1 month and 29
days. His life passed out Saturday Nov. 13, at 9:30 p.m.

DENNISON, ILL. July 22 - Charles Clark, 72 years old, died at 9 o'clock Sunday morning at his home near Dennison. Besides the widow, Mrs. Delphia (should be Zilpha) Clark, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Frank Newell and Mrs. Walter Boyd of Terre Haute, Mrs. Charles Farris of Metcalf, ILL, Mrs. Harley Grathwell of Vermilion, and two sons, Frank and David Clark of Dennison. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Dunlap Christian Church. Burial will be in the Dunlap Cemetery.
OBITUARY - MISS ANNA M. NEWELL
MARSHALL, ILL. Jan 5 - Special - Miss Anna M. Newell, 94
years old, died Sunday at the Union Hospital in Terre Haute. Surviving
are a sister mrs. Mary E. Stogsdill of Fullerton, Cal. and several nieces
and nephews. The body was taken to the ??? Funeral Home where friends
may call and where services will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at
the Dennison Methodist Church, Rev. Russell Youngblood will officiate and
burial will be in Dunlap Cemetery
Obituary - Frank Newell (Saturday
Nov. 23, 1957 Terre Haute Tribune)
Frank Newell, 89 years old, 3006 North Twelfth Street, died at 6:20
o'clock Friday evening
at the Union Hospital. Surviving are the wife, Emma; a daughter,
Mrs. Frances McIntosh of
Terre Haute; a son Edward of RR 3, Terre Haute; two sisters, Mrs. Mary
Stogsdill of
Fullerton, CA, and Miss Anna Newell of Dennison, IL ; three grandchildren
and three great-
grandchildren. The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel,
where services will be held
at 9 a.m. Monday, Rev. Warren Anderson will officiate and burial will
be in Dunlap
Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday.
Obituary-Bertie Lee Rice
Bertie Lee Rice, son of Joseph and Sarah Rice was born August 24, 1897.
He enrolled in
the service August 15, 1917 at Terre Haute. He then went to Fort
Benjamin Harrison at
Indianapolis and from there he moved to Camp Shelby, Miss., and was
in training there until
June, 1918 when he left for France. He was made a corporal and
served as an automatic
rifle instructor and was later called to active service at the front
and met death November 8,
1918.
He made his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Clark,
his mother having died
when he was still young. He leaves his father Joseph Rice, one
brother, Tommy Rice, three
sisters, Emma Newell, Bessie Cunningham and Mae Rice. Many other
relatives and friends
survive his early death.
Obituary - John E. Newell (Tuesday
December 231, 1963 Terre Haute Tribune)
Marshall, IL John E. Newell, 74 years old, of RR 5, died late
Sunday night at his home.
Surviving are the widow, Mae; one son, Dale of Byron, GA; one daughter
Mrs. Lillian
Kirsten of Burbank, CA; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Harvey, Mrs. Lila
Medley and Mrs. Ruth
Ramsey, all of West Terre Haute, and Mrs. Nellie Higgins of Marshall,
and one half sister,
Mrs. Hattie Weaver, of Fulerton CA. Services will be at the Moore
Funeral Home at 2
o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Claude V. Walters and the
Rev. E. C. Ham will
officiate and burial will be in Dunlap Cemetery. Friends may
call after noon Tuesday.

Charleston - John T. Rice, 87, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday July 16, 1990
at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday
at Caudill-King Funeral
Home with the Rev. Mark Prevo officiating. Visitation is from
5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral
home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Masonic rites will
be performed at the grave
site. He was born Oct. 10, 1902, in Reelsville, IN, the son of
Joseph and Sara Clark Rice.
He married Mildred Frye; she died in 1957. He then married Eunice
Brandenburg in 1958;
she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert "Marcella" Ruple of Charleston
and Mrs. Lee
"Geneva" Blanford of Paris; two sisters, Bessie Cunningham of Charleston
and Mae Newell
of Georgia; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He
also was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Mr. Rice was a long-time vendor and concession operator at the Coles
County Fair. He was
a member of the Charleston Christian Church. He was also a member
of Charleston Masonic
Lodge #35, Scottish Rites (Danville Consistory), Inad Shrine of East
St. Louis, and was a
past patron of the Sopha C chapter of Eastern Star.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Charleston.
Obituary - Eunice Rice
Olney - Eunice A. Rice, 86, of Olney, formerly of Charleston, died
at 12:02 a.m. Tuesday
December 15, 1998 at Olney Nursing Center.
She was born Feb., 13, 1912, in Coles County, a daughter of William
and Minnie Fogler
Brandenburg. She married L. L. Anderson, he died in 1954.
She married John Rice in
1958, he died in 1990.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Marcella) Rupel of Charleston;
and several
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers
and six sisters.
Mrs. Rice was a member of the Charleston First Christian Church, Past
Worthy Patron of the
Sopha C Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
The funeral was conducted Thursday at the Caudill-King Funeral Home
with the Rev.
Michael Laflin officiating. The vocalist was Peggy Parker.
Burial was in Rest Haven
Memorial Gardens. The pall bearers were Robert and Frank Rupel,
Michael Laflin and
Lowell Atteberry
Obituary - Bessie Rice Cunningham
Charleston - Bessie Cunningham, 90, of Charleston died at 1:40 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 11,
1990 in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Harper-Swickard Funeral
Chapel. Burial will be in
Dunlap Cemetery, Dunlap, IN. Visitation will be from 5:30 to
8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral
chapel.
She was born April 29, 1900, in Putnam County, IN., the daughter of
Joseph and Sarah Ann
Clark Rice. She married Samuel Cunningham in 1916; he died in
1968.
Surviving are six sons, Lloyd Cunningham of Port Arthur, Texas, Joe
Cunningham of
Clarkston, Wash., Ora Mac Cunningham of Paris, Merle Edward Cunningham
of
Sacramento, CA, Les Cunningham of Peoria, IL., and Ron Cunningham
of Oklahoma; four
daughters, Mrs. Sam (Maxine) Wynn and Mrs. Elmo (Myrtle) Bennett both
of Charleston,
IL., Mrs. Ivan (Francis) Smith of Casey and Mrs. Adrian (JoAnn)
Montgomery of
Kirbyville, Texas; a sister, Mae Newell of Georgia; 31 grandchildren;
47 great-grandchildren
and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death
by two sons and a
daughter.
Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the First Church of God.
